Cliche song drives me up the wall

05 Sep

When Nickelback first came out with their single “How You Remind Me” in 2001, I jumped on the bandwagon, singing along with the song on the radio and illegally downloading it off Napster.  If I hear the song today, I still sing along.  I’m not blowing smoke when I say that I think it’s a really good song with a catchy tune.

But that’s where my love affair with Nickelback ends.  Their following singles sounded a lot like “How You Remind Me”, especially later ones on different albums.  Now, I don’t know which songs they were, nor from which albums because I tried my damnedest not to know that kind of information.  But I knew it was them because no one could mistake Chad Kroeger’s voice.  It irritated me, how much everything sounded like their first smash hit.  Try something new already!

That’s exactly what they didn’t do.  Instead, they wrote the song “If Today Was Your Last Day”, which consists of many cliches set to an annoying bit of music:

My best friend gave me the best advice
He said each day’s a gift and not a given right
Leave no stone unturned and leave your fears behind
And try to take the path less traveled by
That first step you take is the longest stride

Against the grain should be a way of life
What’s worth the prize is always worth the fight
Every second counts
’cause there’s no second try
So live like you’ll never live it twice*
Don’t take the free ride in your own life

Those are just the first two verses in the song.  It’s pretty pathetic that an internationally successful rock band had to stoop so low to meek out another awful single.  Now I know that not only do they recycle their tunes, they recycle their words.  The icing that tops the cake, though, is that because it all sounds so familiar, I can’t seem to get the damned song out of my head.

*Just another way of saying “you only live once”.

You don’t know me, but Daniel Dougan linked your blog on FB…….

I just have to say that my husband days the same thing about that song and changes the station as soon it starts, even if it’s just to listen to commercials!

WHATEVER. I’m sorry if you can’t SEE THE WRITING ON THE WALL, but Nickleback is the most amazing band EVER and if you don’t like cliches, then you can just TAKE YOUR BALL and GO HOME! Instead of complaining when you don’t like something, why don’t you just take the lemons life gives you and MAKE LEMONADE! And put that lemonade in a GLASS THAT’S HALF FULL! You just need to appreciate all the little things in life, including Nickleback lyrics. Because yesterday is past, and tomorrow’s the future, but today is a GIFT! That’s why they call it THE PRESENT!

The scary thing is that so many people liked it, that it became a hit. The U.S. at large LIKES brainless tripe. We need more people like Dan–I laughed out loud at her post! 🙂
