Et tu, Buffy?

Except for a few missing DVDs, I’ve watched all 9 seasons of Seinfeld.  I don’t think I could have appreciated it when I was younger because I wouldn’t have understood half of the jokes, but now I can.  Truly, I find the show funny and will continue to watch the reruns on TV.  I even bought Seinfeld Monopoly (okay, so it was on clearance but I should still get some credit for it).  The money has quotes from the show on it and the “Community Chest” and “Guess” cards (actually “Hellloooo!” and “Yada, Yada, Yada” cards) each make reference to episodes.  Now I can laugh as I lose at Monopoly.

But now that venture is gone, so where do we go next?  Fred suggested that we watch one of my favorite shows.  We’ve already gone through Arrested Development and I’ve heard him say, “They stole that from Seinfeld!” too many times when I mention Friends to suggest that.  So I suggested one of my other all-time favorite shows: Buffy the Vampire Slayer.  Thankfully Hulu has the first season up right now and we watched the first episode the other day.  While it is by far not my favorite episode, I thought Fred really needed to see the characters develop through the seasons (assuming that we will continue to watch).  Also, later seasons refer back to earlier episodes, especially in the comedic aspect, so it’s vital for any new Buffy viewer to start at the beginning.  He seemed to like it okay.  He laughed at a few of the jokes and said, “Booth!” when David Boreanaz came on the screen (he will always be Angel to me).  I have yet to find out if we will continue on this quest.  Even if he doesn’t watch the series with me, I might just go ahead and watch it all again myself.

Sein of a good relationship

My boyfriend Fred is a huge Seinfeld fan.  When we first started dating in April 2009, I had only seen a handful of Seinfeld episodes.  I knew of the parking garage episode and the soup Nazi but I knew little else.  Through Fred’s teachings, though, I learned that the stalled car at the end of The Parking Garage (as it is named) was not written in the script.  I also learned that the word “re-gift” and the phrase “double dip” was coined on the Seinfeld set.

To impress my new boyfriend, I figured I should start watching his favorite TV show.  I’d already seen two of his favorite movies, as they were two of my favorite movies: Pleasantville and The Truman Show.  Why not try out a whole television series?  Since I’m slightly neurotic, I had to start with season one, episode one.  Thankfully, the show was funny or else our relationship could have been short-lived.

A couple of seasons in, I started quoting lines.  I made the suggestion to Fred that I should be rewarded with a kiss every time I quoted Seinfeld.  He agreed, thus further propelling my motivation to watch the whole series.  Sometimes I had to remind him that what I’m saying is actually a quote from Seinfeld and not some random words coming out of my mouth.  Yes, he’s watched the show since its original airdate, but I’ve watched them most recently so they are fresher in my mind.  This also worked to my advantage when we played Seinfeld Scene-It (I gave him the game after he received a promotion at work).  I won the first game and he won the second but I was only a few spaces behind him.  In just over a year, I stored up years of Seinfeld knowledge and used it greatly to my benefit.

As it stands, I have just begun watching season 9, the final season.  In a few weeks, I’ll have seen almost every episode of Seinfeld (there are a few missing DVDs from the library so I have to track down those sometime soon).  Now I can imitate Elaine’s dance and use the phrase, “yada, yada, yada” properly in a sentence.  I scratch my chest and yell, “Owww-uuuuu, that feels good!” or discreetly flick Fred off by scratching my nose with my middle finger (I am not rewarded for this gesture).

Now, I can officially say that I am a Seinfeld fan.

(Fred, I should get at least 100 kisses just for posting this!)
